Make Every Ray of Sunshine Count: What Your Energy Dashboard Is Telling You

Solar panels do their best work on the days you are not thinking about them. The sun comes up, the roof goes to work, and the only place that effort ever shows up is a chart on your phone. Make every ray of sunshine count — and the first step is simply learning to read that chart.

See how your solar, home, battery and the grid work together, right from your energy dashboard. In the snapshot below, the home is 98% self-powered for the day, with 36.1 kWh generated.

Energy dashboard showing 36.1 kWh generated in a day

One clear day: 36.1 kWh generated, peaking just under 6 kW around midday.

What the Generation Curve Is Telling You

That hill across the middle of the screen is the entire day in one picture. It starts climbing a little after sunrise, peaks when the sun is highest, and tails off into the evening. Three things on it are worth a glance every time you open the app:

  • The peak. How high the curve climbs at midday — here, just under 6 kW.
  • The shape. A smooth, even dome means nothing is getting in the way. Notches and dips point to cloud, shade, or something sitting on the glass.
  • The daily total. 36.1 kWh — the number worth comparing against a similar clear day a month earlier.

Underneath the chart, the app splits that generation three ways: 14% went straight into the house (5.2 kWh), 25% charged the Powerwall (9.2 kWh), and 61% — a full 21.7 kWh — was exported to the grid. A roof producing far more than the home can use is exactly what you want to see.

The Battery Picks Up Where the Sun Leaves Off

Open the same dashboard after dark and the picture changes completely. Solar sits at 0 kW. The house is still drawing half a kilowatt — lights, the fridge, everything that never really switches off — and every watt of it is coming out of the Powerwall, which is still sitting at 94%.

Energy flow at night: solar 0 kW, home running from the Powerwall at 94%

After sunset: solar at 0 kW, the home on battery, grid untouched at 0 kW.

That grid reading of 0 kW is where “98% self-powered” comes from. The sun paid for the daytime, the battery paid for the night, and the utility barely got a look in.

Where Panel Cleaning Fits Into All of This

Your dashboard is also the cheapest diagnostic tool you own — and it is very good at catching a problem most homeowners never think to look for.

Dirty panels do not fail. They do not throw an error or switch anything off. They simply produce a little less, every day, and the curve sags instead of breaking. In the Central Valley that happens faster than most people expect: months without rain, farm dust carried in on the wind, spring pollen, and the fine grey film that settles on everything in a Stockton summer.

The way to catch it is comparison, not a single reading. Take a clear, cloudless day this month and put it next to the best clear day from last month — same season, same roof, no new shade. If the peak is lower and the daily total has slipped, the most likely explanation is a layer of dust you cannot see from the ground.

A Simple Monthly Check

  • Pick one clear day each month and note two numbers: the midday peak in kW and the day’s total in kWh.
  • Compare it with the best clear day of the month before.
  • Look for a steady slide over several months rather than one odd day — weather moves these numbers around constantly.
  • Rule out the easy things first: a new tree branch, a dusty week, a run of hazy skies.
  • Check the dashboard again after a cleaning. If soiling was the cause, the difference turns up on the very next sunny day.

When we clean, we use a pure water system and no chemicals at all — nothing is left behind on the glass for the next layer of dust to cling to, and nothing runs off into the garden or the roof. It is the same approach we take on every roof in and around Stockton, and it is why we are happy for you to judge the result on your own dashboard rather than on our word.

More Insight. More Energy Independence.

Your panels are already telling you how they are doing. All it takes is a minute a month to listen. And if the numbers suggest your roof is not making the most of the sunshine it is getting, we can take a look — honestly, and with no obligation.
